When Did Burkey Belser Design The Us Nutrition Facts Label?

I know that the US started using the label on May 8, 1994 and that Burkey got an award sometime in 1997 but when did he actually design the label?

The simple answer to your question is 1994. That’s when the design was complete. The development of the design occurred between 93 and 94.
In my research, I came across quite a few interesting facts, if you’d like a good read:
In 1990, new legislation charged the FDA to develop a labeling program that consumers could use to inform their dietary decisions. Three constraints governed label development. First, complex information had to be conveyed simply, in a way consumers of low-level literacy could understand. Second, poor printing quality demanded simple letter forms and graphic styling: sophisticated graphic devices and color could not be used. Finally, space was at a premium. Manufacturers who jealously guard valuable label space lobbied to have the required nutritional chart occupy the smallest possible portion of the total food label.
Belser’s 1994 redesign of the Nutrition Facts label also attempts to influence consumer decisions. But the label, the most widely reproduced graphic in the world, very nearly had no designer at all.http://www.commarts.com/ca/coldesign/joh…
In 1997, Burkey was awarded a Presidential Design Award by President Bill Clinton for his design of Nutrition Facts, the nation’s food labeling system, which the New York Times reported to be the most frequently published design of the 20th century (and now the 21st).
