What Would An Excess Of Sodium Consumption Do To One’s Body And Health?
Posted by Zolly | Under Nutrition Wednesday Dec 30, 2009You know, like when you look at the nutrition facts for instant noodles and such, you would see up to 78% sodium. Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but it seems a lot.
Out of curiosity, what would excess sodium intake do to the body?
You are absolutely justified in being concerned about the high amount of sodium! You should INDEED stay clear of high sodium content as you pointed out with the instant noodles! High sodium can cause many health issues…one BIG one would be ‘fluid retention’ which is common in older people BUT can occur at any age! With fluid retention other health issues then occur. To name a few: edema(fluid excess accumulates in legs/feet areas = edema) but can occur anywhere. Also, fluid can accumulate around the heart causing the heart muscle to work harder because of the fluid build-up thus leading to various heart conditions…All in all be concientious about your salt consumption IF you want to help your body stay on the healthy path! Those noodle mention 78% sodium…YES that is ALOT & considered high sodium content! Good for you~ Got to http://www.WebMd.com & read more if you are curious & want easy to understand terms~
take care~
Excess sodium intake is very bad for you, in both the long and short term. Too much sodium in the diet can cause one to retain water or become dehydrated, and puts a heavier load on the kidneys. In the long run, a excessively high-sodium diet could cause hypertension, hypoglycemia, renal (kidney) disease, poor circulation, and all kinds of other nasty things. Most instant foods, including ramen noodles, are extremely high in sodium. Highly processed foods of any type (bologna, etc.) should be avoided for a healthy diet. Salting at the table should also be limited, instead try things like garlic, carrot, pepper, etc. (like mrs. dash).
I don’t know a lot of specifics, but my boss recently had a kidney stone & said it was due to too much sodium. He said it was the most painful thing he’s ever endured!
