Saturday Nov 28, 2009

How can i do this! my grandparents are taking my sister and i on vacation as a graduation gift, we’re going to Oman, England, Australia, and China. (I know, i’m the luckiest person alive!)
I think i’ll be fine in Aussie, my aunt is veg also, but the rest of them, it’s going to be so hard to keep proper nutrition! i’m really worried, we will be gone for about 8 weeks!
I will not eat meat, not even if it’s to be polite, i just can’t do it :/
are there any supplements i could bring, or what? i have no clue?!
help, please!

You will be fine in Australia and England. There should be something you can eat in Oman, even if it’s just fruit and bread. China is another story, though, as they eat anything that moves and anything that doesn’t move. Their idea of vegetarian food and ours doesn’t always correspond. They usually cook the greens, such as bok choy, in oyster sauce, so watch out. Once again, there should be plenty of fresh fruit available (make sure you wash it before eating). I was okay in Hong Kong for 2 weeks, but a lot of my meals were in Indian restaurants over there.

I just wanted to add a note on China. In most regions if you say you are Buddhist, then you should be able to get vegetarian food fairly easily. Most cooks will not necessarily understand vegetarian, but will understand Buddhist. Since Buddhists in China tend to be vegetarian, this will help you get vegetarian food in the country. I don’t think you will have a problem in the other countries as far as finding vegetarian food.

You should also be ok in all of those countries. I think we have the highest meat consumption in America than anywhere else in the world. Many other countries eat meat sparingly because it’s expensive. Also, if you eat fish, you really shouldn’t have too many problems. I would take a look at a few travel guides to see more about each countries eating habits.

You should be OK in England as well. If you’re worried about proper nutrition, I would bring Cliff Bars with you. They’re filling and have different nutrients in them so that you can make sure you’re getting nutrition.
Good luck and enjoy your trip!

You should looks up stores and restaurants online before going to the places you are going to. England is a terrible place to be veg at. I remember the times I went there I found only meat everywhere! I was able to find a veggie restaurant only in Camden Town.
