If You Only Need Nutrition From Food Why Couldn’t You Just Use Supplements?
Posted by Zolly | Under Nutrition Monday Jun 15, 2009There are things that supplements cannot provide you that are necessary for your body to fuction and survive, like fat and calories. Without those you would starve to death. I suppose if you drank meal replacement shakes three times a day you would survive although I would think the muscles in your jaw would grow rigid from not chewing food anymore.
If you don’t use your body organs for a long time or ever again or say you don’t have a b.m. because you don’t eat, they may shut down or cause a mass of other health problems, your body is a machine, you cannot live only feeding yourself vitamins and water. You need the whole body working together to have optimum health.
You’ve hit the proverbial nail on the head. We need MORE than just nutrients from our food. Our bodies are intended to work with solids, and if it doesn’t have them, the gastro-intestinal tract begins to have problems. The fibers and “bulk” of foods are important for that portion of our bodies to function properly; this is especially true because it enables our bodies to absorb nutrients gradually, rather than all in one moment.
Try it and report back.
Can you say puckered colon??
If you use only supplements, where are you going to get your energy and body building blocks from?
Food helps to keep us satisfied too. For most of us, it is a joy to eat.

In theory I suppose you could but the fiber, vitamins, minerals, and satiety that comes from about 12oz of broccoli would have to come from about 2-3 different supplements and would either not fill you up the same or have loads of needless calories.
Also, when taking a cocktail of vitamins certain ones actually inhibit the absorbtion of others. This is why you should always vary your meals and include all macronutrient groups with each one.
