I Have A 8 Month Old Son And I Am Wondering If Anyone Uses The Gerber Desserts 2nd Foods?
Posted by Zolly | Under Nutrition Sunday Dec 27, 2009My girlfriend said she doesn’t give her son this because it is unhealthy. I am just wondering if this is true or not. It has all the nutrition facts on the label and they all seem just fine but she swears it is not good for babies.Anyone agree with her or think she is wrong?Thank you for the help!
Your baby does not need any dessert (neither do any of us for that matter).
I actually think it is kind of funny that we all care so much about the health of our kids up until they are about 1-2 years old…then we allow them to drink soda, have dessert in their lunch and avoid fruits and veggies.
Why do you feel the need to give your baby dessert?
My sister who has a 3 year old used it when she was that old the doctor said it was fine so my other sister is useing it now!
Actually, dessert can be good for you – in moderation. Sugar signals to the brain that the meal is ending, and makes you feel more full for a longer period of time. As such, a tiny bit of dessert after a meal is a good thing. For an infant, I’d say 2tsp or so, and it should not replace any part of the meal.
They aren’t healthy at all. They are full of sugar, corn syrup, and other crap. Stick with real fruits, nothing that says dessert.
I won’t use the desserts because they have so much sugar in them. There are also foods with eggs and strawberries in them made for babies but my doctor said because of allergies to hold off on these foods for at least a year.
I worked in an infant daycare, and out of 20 moms I can only remember 2 that actually used the desserts. Most just used the fruits as desserts then graduated to the Gerber Graduates cookies and Cereal Bars. I would believe that they are as bad as eating cakes and pies would be for adults.
My son wouldn’t touch baby food. Period. He hated the stuff. I just mashed up our food really well. As far as desserts go, if you start them on sugary stuff as a baby, they will be hooked on it when they get older and then you’ll have trouble. I’m not sure if it’s unhealthy, but I prefer not to use it.
No – they have added sugar.
Why give them ‘banana dessert’, for example, when you can give them just bananas? There are certainly enough naturally occurring sugars in fruit without adding more.
My pregnant sister, however, gobbled up lots of ‘strawberry desserts’…:)
I agree w/ your girlfriend. These “desserts” often have other ingredients, such as milk or egg products, along w/ other ingredients that babies don’t need. I have never given my daughter the desserts, I give her fruit instead.
I have used them occasionally. After a meal sometimes I will give her a third of a container. I don’t see anything wrong with a little dessert. Sometimes it seems like people are so worried about what they feed their babies. Then when their kids get a little older they are allowing their children eat a diet of mainly chicken fingers and sugar cereal.
My daughter’s only 3 months so obviously I’m not feeding her food, but my sister has a 0 month old and swears that stuff is bad for babies and won’t feed it to her son. I believe her..it has a lot of sugar and just stuff that does nothing for babies.
I fed my baby the vanilla custard, and apple dutch pies, etc and mixed with a little rice cereal since she was 5 months…My baby was full, and she enjoyed it.. My baby is at her regular weight and she is healthy…MY DOCTOR NEVER told me not to feed it to her…I don’t think its anything wrong with it…If it was that bed for a baby I don’t think it will be on the market for them to eat…But hey everybody has thier own opinion…Like i SAID my baby is fine…
