How Can You Find Out How Much Fat Is In A Doritos Chip?
Posted by Zolly | Under Nutrition Friday Feb 26, 2010I’m trying to do a lab and my project is finding out how much fat is in a cheese Doritos chip?
I can’t just look at the back of the nutrition and facts, I need to do it in my own….
My teacher said i have to smash the dorito chip into pieces…… how can i find out the fat like that?
1. Grind up the samples and mix them with petroleum ether to extract the fat.
2. Separate the petroleum ether from the potato chips by filtration into a weighed beaker.
3. Evaporate the petroleum ether on a hot plate.
4. Weigh the beaker and calculate the mass of fat by difference.
5. Calculate the percent fat in the chips.
– That is how you’re supposed to do a lab determination of fat in a cheese doritos chip.
Ok, read the back and see how much fat is in 100g.
Then, try and find out the average weight of a dorito.
Once you have that weight you should be able to find out how much fat is contained in the averagely sized chip.
Not sure about smashing it though, this seems to be the most practical way of finding out.
I’m not sure, but mash it into pieces, then heat it up (with water)… i think the fat is supposed to float on the top when its hard again. then scrape it off and you got it.
