Does It Make Sense For Chocolate Milk To Have Less Fat Than Whole Milk?

Friday Dec 18, 2009

My chocolate milk apparently has less fat in it than my whole milk according to the nutrition facts… How can this be?

If the chocolate milk is made with skim, 1%, or 2%, it makes total sense. Chocolate milk (at least the store-bought kind) is often made with chocolate *flavor,* not real chocolate, and thus the flavor adds very little fat.

chocolate milk might have less fat, but that doesn’t mean it has less calories…
a bag of sugar for example has virtually no fat, but a lot of calories
typically chocolate milk will be made from semi-skimmed milk, plus a load of other sweeteners, flavourings and stuff
it’s fine for you in moderation, but be aware that it is probably laden with sugar

Yes, it makes sense. The “chocolate” part doesn’t have any fat in it, it’s mostly intense flavoring agents (in other words, they don’t melt down a Cadbury and mix it into the milk to make choc milk!). They’re almost certainly using 1% or 2% milk as the base for your tasty beverage.

it is common for them to use 2% milk for chocolate milk. i like my chocolate milk to be full fat so i always look at the label before buying. IMHO the full fat version tastes more like the chocolate milk from my childhood.

well, you don’t think they’re flavoring that milk with hershey bars, do you? it might have less fat, but definitely not less sugar. :)
