Do You Give Your Dog Supplements? If So, Which Ones?

Tuesday Jun 30, 2009

I totally understand the importance of proper nutrition and I feed EVO kibble which I think is a very good food. But there is so much research out there now on the importance of antioxidants to prevent disease, CoQ10 to strengthen the heart muscle, glucosamine for joints, omega 3′s for skin and inflammation. I’d like to know if you are giving your dog supplements and if you are pleased with the product and results.

My three dogs are on Glycoflex II (a joint supplement) for varying stages of arthritis – and yes I love it and it works very well.
One of my dogs is also on omega 3 & 6 fatty acids (3V caps) for chronic skin allergies and shhe also does much better on this.
Quality of supplements varies greatly so read up on the specific one to make sure it has the science behind it and the quality of ingredients you want for your dog.
Which supplement(s) would be appropriate is based on if your dog has any health problems.

I started giving my dog a liquid supplement along with his water. I saw improvements in his skin, hair, eyes and overall attitude within two weeks. He even had blood tests 1). Pre-supplements, and 2). 3 months later – and our vet was impressed how much healthier he was.
Worked for us. Hope it works for you.

At the moment i add tuna or sardines to my dogs dinner which helps his coat and skin.
I have just started with rescue remedy as he has nervous bouts towards strangers and this helps calm him down.. Other than that i don’t have any need to add anything to his diet. If and when the time comes i may add what is needed for any particulr problem

EVO is good food. You probably don’t have to add a supplelment. I feed Canidae and the only supplement I give is Bravo Salmon Oil. One of my shelties seems to have an allergy in the fall where she chews at her feet. Once the frost hits, she is fine. This year she was on the salmon oil and the allergy was very mild.
I also have friends who use Nutro as a supplement and are very happy with it.
