Can You Add Fish Oil, From Fish Oil Vitamins, To Your Cat’s Food For Extra Nutrition?
Posted by Zolly | Under Nutrition Monday Jan 4, 2010I have a 20 year old Persian and 2 other cats. I just thought of it the other day and squeezed a little fish oil in their food. I poked one of my capsules and squeezed it into their food and stirred. I thought the extra vitamins and other benefits of fish oil may help with my elderly Persian. The cats seem to love it, but I thought I’d ask anyone with experience if this is a good idea. I’ve done it twice, but would like to know if it is OK to add to food.
I appreciate your help and advice.
Thank you!
It is a good idea, but it would be better to get an oil meant for cats. That’s just because the human stuff may contain additional ingredients that cats shouldn’t have, or shouldn’t get too much of.
Here’s my general advice on fish oil:
Fish oil:
Only Natural Pet Icelandic Salmon Oil (pump) (http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/O…
Good for hairballs, good for skin and coat.
Selection: You typically won’t use human fish oils – at least not the ones in liquid form – because they have added citrus flavors to many of them. You don’t want to use cod liver oil – at least not on a very regular basis – because it has too much vitamin a. Plain old fish oil or salmon oil is best. I prefer it in liquid form as opposed to capsules for ease of dispensing. You want it to say that they’ve done everything possible to remove mercury. I prefer one with the fewest additives, especially not rosemary. Or propyllgallate.
For ease of use, I prefer to buy it in liquid form in a squeeze bottle or pump.
Dosage: I give a squirt every day. It’s not measured but probably comes to somewhere around 1/4 tsp.
Extra vits and minerals are okay i guess, but over feeding of which should be avoided. Eg: vit A causes extra bone growth to the neck area of sealions. (I heard it personally from a vet). As for dosage, I won’t be sure, so consult a vet.
I feed mine salmon oil and it gives them really nice coats and promotes general over all health since it’s loaded with fatty acids. You can find a pump bottle of it at some pet stores and online as well.

Awesome that your Persian’s 20 – mine’s only 4 – I hope he lives as long as yours has
oh yes.. its wonderful for their coats, makes them glossy and shiny and it helps older cats because it lubricates their joints!
yes, the extra fishoil is good for them – you should look up how much extra too give them because too much can make them sick- experience
i give my pets (dog and cat) the oil drained from canned mussels or sardines. it is supposed to keep their coats nice and shiny and healthy.
yep the vet said half a 1000 capsule will do or a small squirt.
yes i give mine cod liver oil ,and also my dogs they love it
